The role of the Student Systems Team (SST) is to carry out the systems analysis, development and support of student information systems at Cranfield and Shrivenham campuses. The solutions, based around the SITS:Vision product where appropriate, are to act as the definitive source of student records and information. The core system supports the whole student lifecycle from enquiry and application, through to admission, registration, assessment, award calculation, research progression, thesis submission, graduation and alumni activities. The integrated solution is being strategically developed to support increased automated processing and workflow to streamline activities across the University. Currently there is one SITS system on each campus with varying degrees of compatibility, but the intention is to merge these into one University system.

The team works with other IT specialists to integrate SITS with core University IT systems in order to reduce the level of rekeying and the need for checking of data and to improve the consistency of data. The team also develops data structures to allow the analysis of student information for marketing, Higher Education returns or business optimisation purposes.

The team works with internal and external staff/consultants to ensure the delivery of the required IT solutions and related services. These include Tribal (the supplier of SITS), Academic Services, Schools, specialist units (careers, library, VCO) and other University IT/IS technical specialists.

Job Purpose

Your role will be to provide management of the technical development team for student information systems, based around SITS but including integration with other systems, in line with University development quality standards. This includes analysis and advice of appropriate technical solutions, programming of workflows to streamline/automate business processes, selection of appropriate SITS modules and the specification of data structures, integration with other University IT systems. ‘Universes’ and related services will also be maintained to ensure optimal performance for users. Systems analysis and development will be carried out within formal frameworks.

Advanced technical support to users on all aspects of the core services will be provided.

Education/

qualifications

A degree or equivalent qualification in a computer-related subject and / or significant experience in leading and managing a range of high value / quality software development projects. Evidence of continual professional development.

 

Experience

Significant experience of managing and leading a software development team (including external consultants) within an operational environment to deliver significant system improvements.

Substantial experience of working with, and formal training in using, software development methodologies

Recent experience of developing workflow solutions.

Significant technical experience of developing and maintaining complex databases and understanding of data relationship for systems

Knowledge

Operational knowledge of enterprise Higher Education student administration systems and enterprise reporting software, and integration with other systems.

Skills/aptitudes

Ability to communicate effectively with both technical and non-technical people

Ability to plan and prioritise own work and of the team to meet short-term and long term objectives.

Ability to work independently and as the leader of the team.
